    RCS Business Messaging (RBM)

RCS Business Messaging is Google's program that lets verified brands send rich, interactive RCS messages to Android phones and to iPhones on iOS 18 and later, through approved partners and carrier networks.

What RBM is in plain English

RCS Business Messaging, usually shortened to RBM, is the Google-managed framework that turns the consumer RCS protocol into a usable channel for businesses. It defines how a brand registers, gets verified, builds an "agent," and sends messages to Android phones and iPhones at scale.

If RCS is the road, RBM is the licensing system, the lane markings, and the toll booths that make commercial traffic possible.

How a brand gets on RBM

Every brand that wants to send RCS business messages goes through a verification process, either directly with Google or, more commonly, through a CPaaS or RCS aggregator partner. The brand submits its logo, color, hero banner, business description, contact info, privacy policy, and terms. Google reviews the submission, the carriers review it, and once approved the brand becomes a verified RBM agent.

That verification is the foundation of everything else. It is what produces the verified checkmark, the brand logo on every message, and the trust signal that drives response rates higher than SMS.

What an RBM agent can do

A live RBM agent supports the full RCS feature set: rich cards and carousels, suggested replies, suggested actions like dial-a-number or open-a-URL, file transfer, calendar invites, location requests, and free-form 2-way messaging. Most brands pair the agent with an AI layer so customers can have actual conversations rather than just receive blasts.

Why brands run RBM through a partner

Going direct to Google for RBM is possible but rarely practical. Brands typically use a CPaaS provider or RCS-specialist platform because:

    • The partner already has the carrier connections that make delivery work
    • Verification and brand asset management get handled end-to-end
    • The platform layers messaging logic, AI, analytics, and CRM integration on top of raw RBM
    • Compliance with carrier rules, opt-in handling, and rate limits is taken care of

    RBM on iPhone

RCS for Business, the current name for RBM, reaches iPhones on iOS 18 and later through supported carriers, using the same verified agent that reaches Android phones. Apple Messages for Business is a separate Apple program with its own registration and features. Brands can add it, but it is not required to reach iPhone users over RCS.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between RCS and RBM?
RCS is the underlying messaging protocol. RBM is Google's program that lets businesses send RCS messages to Android and iPhone users with brand verification, rich content, and analytics.
How long does RBM verification take?
Most brands complete verification and go live in about two to three weeks when working through an experienced partner. Direct submissions and complex brands can take longer.
Can RBM messages be sent to iPhones?
Yes. RCS for Business messages from a verified agent reach iPhones on iOS 18 and later through supported carriers, in the native Messages app. Apple Messages for Business is a separate, optional Apple program, not a requirement for reaching iPhone users over RCS.
Is there a cost to register an RBM agent?
Google does not charge for verification itself. Costs come from the partner platform, message fees set by carriers, and any AI or CRM tooling layered on top.
