Conversational Commerce
Conversational commerce is the practice of running the entire purchase or service journey, from discovery through transaction, inside a 2-way messaging conversation rather than across a website or app.
The commerce model behind the buzzword
Conversational commerce is what happens when the messaging thread becomes the storefront. A customer asks a question, gets product recommendations as rich cards, picks one, confirms a size or option, pays, and gets a confirmation, all in a single conversation that lives in the native messages app.
It is not a new website. It is a fundamentally different shape for the same commerce flow.
Why it works
Three forces make conversational commerce real now:
- RCS gives messaging the visual fidelity of an app, so product cards, carousels, and rich confirmations actually look good
- AI agents can hold genuine conversations, understand preferences, and take actions, not just answer FAQs
- Customers spend more time in their messages app than any other category of mobile app, so the channel meets them where they already are
The combination collapses friction. There is no "download our app." There is no "click here to visit our site." There is just a conversation that happens to result in a purchase or a booked service.
What it actually looks like
Examples that are running in production today:
- An airline confirms a missed connection and rebooks the passenger inside the thread, with the new boarding pass attached
- A retailer recommends three product options based on a stated need, the customer taps one, and pays through a deep link
- A home services company prices a job from a description, books a technician for a specific window, and confirms with a calendar invite
- A restaurant takes a reservation, sends a reminder, and handles the rebook if the party size changes
What it is not
Conversational commerce is not a chatbot that says "click here to visit our store." That is just a redirect. The point is to keep the entire interaction in the conversation, including the moment of purchase. When done well, the customer never leaves the messages app.
Why brands invest
The economics tend to be very strong because conversational commerce attacks the parts of the funnel where most ecommerce revenue leaks: cart abandonment, checkout friction, and post-purchase support. Eliminating the channel switch from message to web to app to email tends to improve completion rates dramatically.
